As 2021 draws to a close and we begin to look forward to 2022 we caught up with Ingenium CEO, Dr. James Ring and asked him his advice for new leaders in the upcoming year.
What would you tell yourself in your first leadership role as a CEO now?
Not to worry, enjoy the journey because that’s what being a leader is, and follow your natural instincts more, trust them. I was always naturally a people person, I knew how to communicate and listen to them and I had good intuition so following that worked, however, I did have a good sounding board, people I trusted, to help me straighten out my thinking.
What should leaders be focused on in 2022?
It is all about people. Focus on their development, bring them on the journey with you, help them understand and respect change, not fear it. Let them lead, watch them grow and develop and it is amazing how much pressure you will take off yourself in the long run.
What are your top three tips for new leaders?
- Nothing beats hard work so don’t do it if you want the easy life.
- Look after your people, it’s not about you.
- The organisation always comes before any individual including yourself. Learn to say no. This might from time to time make you unpopular but in the long run, people will respect you for doing the right thing.
What is the most memorable piece of leadership advice you ever received?
Over the years, I have gotten loads of some great advice from people and I have also learned some myself. A few guiding rules I have though are:
- It’s very hard to argue when nobody is arguing back: ignore certain things/people, don’t get coaxed into arguments that you don’t need to have with people whose opinions don’t matter.
- Go in with your minutes written: know the outcomes, the real work is done before the meeting, engage with people as best you can before the meeting to ensure you get what you need.
- Realism over Optimism: see through people who make things sound too good. Always focus on the reality with an eye on the future, deal with that and you will be fine
- Be Kind: just because you’re a leader, you don’t have to be the stereotypical ball breaker, there is nothing wrong with being kind and compassionate while still being tough and getting the job done. Find the balance.
- Tune Out: there are more important things than work. Relax with family and friends, enjoy life, have a laugh because life is too short.
